Summary In January 1863, in the mountains of North Carolina, Confederate soldiers captured and murdered thirteen prisoners. These suspected Unionist guerrillas were members of a relatively isolated, traditional mountain community; their killers were led by officers more open to the changing currents of the nineteenth century. This book examines that slaughter, known as the Shelton Laurel Massacre, and the events that led up to it.
Contents The place -- The officers and the general -- Loyalty and treason in the mountains -- The killing -- Aftermath.
