Iago, angry at being passed over for promotion, vows to bring ruin to the lives of both Othello, his moorish captain, and Michael Cassio, the man Othello promoted to second-in-command. Iago's plotting causes Othello to dismiss Cassio unjustly and leads him to suspect his beautiful wife, Desdemona, of infidelity. Othello is driven to kill Desdemona, but afterwards learns of her innocence and commits suicide.
