Brutus Jones, who had emulated the exploitative practices of whites to become emperor of a Caribbean island, resigns from office in order to enjoy his ill-gotten gains. Jones flees into the jungle, but can escape neither his pursuers nor incidents from his past. He is shot and killed with bullets forged from money, since he had convinced the natives that only a silver bullet could kill him.
