Summary Lilienthal presents the conflict between Israel and its neighbors as part of U.S. national interest. He examines the political goals of Truman and Eisenhower with respect to U.S. support for Israel, as well as the political choices of England, France, and Israel in their attack on Egypt. Lilienthal argued that the status of the Palestinian refugees needed to be resolved quickly in order to achieve a lasting peace. He believed the final consequence of continued Israel-based conflict in the region would be annexation by the Soviet Union. The author also analyzes U.S. press coverage of the region's conflict and criticizes the media's bias toward Israel on religious grounds; this, he thought, prevented the public and policy makers from making decisions about the region from the perspective of actual national interest.
