Summary This is one of the few books on substantive public policy written by a political scientist with behavioral training. The author subjects the key policies of the post-World War II period to close scrutiny and finds virtually every area of government activity- business regulation, agriculture, housing and urban programs, the War on Poverty, civil rights, foreign policy- marked by blind adherence to formulas that bear little relevence to the conditions they were designed to correct. The author finds the need for reform beyond solution by patchwork governmental commissions. -- from Back Cover.
Contents The old public philosophy: capitalistic ideology and the automatic society -- Pluralism and the transformation of capitalist ideology -- The new public philosophy: interest-group liberalism -- The origin and first consequences of pluralistic government: agriculture, commerce, and labor -- Liberal jurisprudence: policy without law -- Making democracy safe for the world: on fighting the next war -- Cities: the American tragedy -- Interest-group liberalism and poverty: the end of the welfare state -- Federal urban policy-what not to do and what to do about apartheid -- Toward juridical democracy.
