Summary The descriptive classification of fabric structures presented here is based on a long and wide-ranging study of representative fabrics from ancient and primitive cultures, and of the methods and terminology employed in analyzing, describing, and classifying them. After a number of years of collecting and attempting to collate available data, the bewildering inconsistencies and incongruities encountered in museum records and labels, and in published descriptions and discussions, led me to undertake a detailed and systematic investigation of the essential characteristics of ancient and primitive fabrics and the problems involved in acquiring, recording, and transmitting information about them. - Foreword.
